<br />
This 4th of July, I made my own flag. It's not the traditional red, white and blue but it does have stripes and a few stars...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHtd4TBE3wY6PSVfuCryjr5vKNETwn824fyDkXd8dgwIYueU6CHmunPyt3Pgy6mp6OjUZlwKCb0VpDeZSLHzUSGUa5PtiephDbrGhfGzXTzjjYTrn10baxSvHS5aAnhG0QOOGb/s1600/P1010600.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHtd4TBE3wY6PSVfuCryjr5vKNETwn824fyDkXd8dgwIYueU6CHmunPyt3Pgy6mp6OjUZlwKCb0VpDeZSLHzUSGUa5PtiephDbrGhfGzXTzjjYTrn10baxSvHS5aAnhG0QOOGb/s400/P1010600.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>

<br />
I decided to keep some boards natural because the knots and grain of the wood was too awesome to cover up! The other boards, I simply dry brushed on some white paint...<br />

<br />
I knew I wanted to go larger with this flag so I choose a pallet that had the larger planks. As soon as I saw these boards I knew I had to try and keep them intact and use every knot, nail hole and crack I could. I love the texture on these boards!<br />
<br />

It was such a pain to pry these boards off, but well worth the effort! I love all the nail holes. I even took our grinder to the nails, grinding off just below the nail heads so I could keep them in the boards.<br />
<br />

<br />
Because I lack any artistic skills in the drawing department, I did what any useful person would do...trace. I have this little star that I used as my outline. Once I traced the outline of my star, I cut it out with the jig saw.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoHjd6wl1pddARL5ApNUieQSa09_IpdLS_K3M4xYKCe35LqE3z30vhf3CuFaXzvWFBZlmPBkpvIqiLjAImpYqd7SqR6i4FvT4OXxL6n-p_cNbJt8OrBIZJguFwLCVjq-W6DgHN/s1600/P1010584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoHjd6wl1pddARL5ApNUieQSa09_IpdLS_K3M4xYKCe35LqE3z30vhf3CuFaXzvWFBZlmPBkpvIqiLjAImpYqd7SqR6i4FvT4OXxL6n-p_cNbJt8OrBIZJguFwLCVjq-W6DgHN/s400/P1010584.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Some other tools I used was wire and rusty bells to join the boards together. I layed all my boards down on the garage floor, on top of a piece of plywood so I could drill the holes for the wire. The hardest part was getting my spacing between each board just right. Once I had each piece of wire cut (6), I shoved some bells on and twisted the wire together. I have this handy little wire twister thing (no idea what it's really called), but you can use a pencil or even your finger depending on how thick your wire is.<br />

I wish I could say I was original with this one but I did get some inspiration from The Lettered Cottage with their <a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/coastal-style-distressed-wood-flag-tutorial">coastal-style flag</a>.<br />

There she is in all her distressed glory. I'm still deciding if I need a 5th "stripe?" Such a simple craft, go find a pallet and get started. I think she'll be hanging out all year long...<br />
<br />
I'm linking up with Donna this week...<br />

I have made my own bread and attempted to jar some apricot jam. I have officially planted flowers, 3 to be exact. I've also started making my own furniture for our home. I've painted and I'm learning how to decorate and discover the things I love. All of this has happened since I moved to Idaho over a year ago. Maybe it's because it's a whole new world, I have no job, no family, no friends, no money and lots of time on my hands...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
I miss my family, my friends and my "old" life so much and I'll admit that I completely shut down. I felt lost. I sat around all day with the kids, never leaving the house for days...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQcVKxkPh7atjKjkaV1BdpMsBUXeApnd1n263OhB0Zta_IyUlJAVqgbH8d0Hl4e7bne5DAE5jB-Gr6DsIPQYRWzy9asuESdXCmcIpORhlt8VNHkwtHvf0lVYBzz90vdak-P4L/s1600/P1000217.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQcVKxkPh7atjKjkaV1BdpMsBUXeApnd1n263OhB0Zta_IyUlJAVqgbH8d0Hl4e7bne5DAE5jB-Gr6DsIPQYRWzy9asuESdXCmcIpORhlt8VNHkwtHvf0lVYBzz90vdak-P4L/s320/P1000217.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Most days I still don't leave the house, but I'm getting better about getting out and at least taking the kids to the park for play dates. I've starting developing talents and learning about things I never even thought of before.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> It's amazing to me how much time I've wasted not learning about EVERYTHING! My Dad installs hardwood floors for a living. If only I went to work with him I would be able to install floors myself. My grandma can sew anything. If only I watched her and was able to sit with her and learn how to make things. My Mom knows how to do stained glass. I never learned. The talents in my family and of those around me are amazing and inspire me to be a better person and learn as much as I can.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
Now, it's my time to learn and give that opportunity to teach my children so they don't grown up not knowing what talents they may develop and enjoy.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga5zQErUhu-ifAg8mJwpFIx7JJu2fW2bsUrbLgPO_TDwRtpzcb27Hp3uokFNv4_Quu2Mma0QEF3SNSLIGaRQBCuNvF52D_wFO2Usklb5Dj_9SGO3ixwp5G768zs0c8LLtWoJmH/s1600/P1010483.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga5zQErUhu-ifAg8mJwpFIx7JJu2fW2bsUrbLgPO_TDwRtpzcb27Hp3uokFNv4_Quu2Mma0QEF3SNSLIGaRQBCuNvF52D_wFO2Usklb5Dj_9SGO3ixwp5G768zs0c8LLtWoJmH/s320/P1010483.JPG" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div>How to be a parent...<br />
<br />
I'm so thankful for my family and the time I have been given to raise my children and grow together as we learn about the world around us. The time I've had up here away from everything I know...a blessing in disguise.oSoPurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10802339585192575168noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33176422.post-51515859372664226122011-08-14T15:13:00.002-06:002011-08-14T15:59:30.088-06:00Hung Up...I originally made some curtains out of drop cloths for our living room (yes, I joined the drop cloth phenomenon - don't judge me), with some inspiration from <a href="http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2010/03/hangin-with-fabric-for-so-you-think.html">Donna</a>. I did sew a small pocket so I can slip a pole through it, simple and easy! Once they were hung up though, they covered way too much of the door and blocked light which I HATE. Plus the kids and dog were pulling or stepping on it every time they went outside. Did I mention I also hate doing laundry?<br />
<br />
My solution? Move them over just a little bit more, high and wide as <a href="http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/06/email-answer-its-curtains-for-you/">John and Sherry</a> always say. Tons of awesome information and helpful hints, I love them. So, down they came and into the front room they went. And I love them there...until I change my mind again :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggOhXa4yG-XyEzbLodyeIzqr2ckQKoyfwNQRLiyVN1ZneF50oftZG1I8aDuCJW2iqlkWFqk6qk6FoLLJ8pBRBsqKjfsQX9aveFAF9_NYhnfrfk_1VaJJuSipzCy9npXBQ6RtXh/s1600/P1010502.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggOhXa4yG-XyEzbLodyeIzqr2ckQKoyfwNQRLiyVN1ZneF50oftZG1I8aDuCJW2iqlkWFqk6qk6FoLLJ8pBRBsqKjfsQX9aveFAF9_NYhnfrfk_1VaJJuSipzCy9npXBQ6RtXh/s400/P1010502.JPG" width="380" /></a></div><br />
Our living room has been without curtains for, oh about 6 months. Shameful. It only bothers me at night when our creepy neighbor walks around late at night and makes our dog go crazy. Weirdo. Since I wanted to move the rod over another 6 inches, our original rod didn't fit. More waiting. Then I had a brilliant idea, how about a long branch? My brother-in-law Chris has one above their dining room area and it looks great...really rustic. I told Paul we should go branch hunting and he looked at me like I was crazy. What?! Doesn't everyone go hunting for fallen branches or dead trees around town? And if the tree is dead, people shouldn't care if we cut a little off? I'm just saying, I don't want to steal anything...just purposefully remove and reuse. He wasn't having it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuyNrXPbP8_dNE_mEaN3gxJEKPDQH93oZvxB6Lx5Um7ObadG4P-wgDkRIfQyfy6W-8Mg1nmzy9eFX9DoWeQlSXMrXUa0B9aeNO0l9Pbcgxkg6DozCnkQ_EQ80Q4vHgYQcC_NDl/s1600/P1010548.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuyNrXPbP8_dNE_mEaN3gxJEKPDQH93oZvxB6Lx5Um7ObadG4P-wgDkRIfQyfy6W-8Mg1nmzy9eFX9DoWeQlSXMrXUa0B9aeNO0l9Pbcgxkg6DozCnkQ_EQ80Q4vHgYQcC_NDl/s400/P1010548.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Luckily my brother-in-law told us half of his tree in their backyard broke off recently, and there were tons of branches for us to choose from. Gotta love FREE. Paul and Chris went searching and came back with this looong branch, full of little nubs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2IWzh3OjVU1SY_Nl1wE7PwSx1pxukmLUa3a4mBicxZVpAL-04Js1H1uWlXDZOeHJbZeUQTjC3FwAAhb4A9ob51yljbLSM_M_twFnG9wNpCxSeVY6c1xcLCDlrf7df7fh-MAR1/s1600/P1010473.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2IWzh3OjVU1SY_Nl1wE7PwSx1pxukmLUa3a4mBicxZVpAL-04Js1H1uWlXDZOeHJbZeUQTjC3FwAAhb4A9ob51yljbLSM_M_twFnG9wNpCxSeVY6c1xcLCDlrf7df7fh-MAR1/s400/P1010473.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

</div>Hmm, maybe a little too rustic for me. You can see how far over the holes were before, with the other brackets. Plus, I want to be able to close the curtains at night and I can't imagine tugging successfully over those nubs. I lived with it up there for a week just to be <strong>sure</strong> I didn't like it. We took a trip to JoAnn's yesterday and they were having a 40% off sale on curtain rods. Of course I had to call Paul and ask him how long 120 inches was to make sure it would fit, because my measuring skills are seriously lacking. It would fit perfectly with room to spare. So for $25 I picked up a new rod. <br />
<br />
Now I have to get making those curtains. I had some white fabric that never got used for a different project. So... my sewing skills are also seriously lacking and I have <u>no idea what I'm doing!</u> If I even attempt to describe this as a tutorial, you will laugh so it's more of a play by play of what I did...my way :)<br />
<br />
First thing I did was wash the fabric. Second, I sliced off the bottom, to get rid of the fraying and make things as even as I could. I know there has to be some fabulous tips for getting things straight and making things easier, but I don't have time to search for it. I'm just winging it...<br />
<br />
Ironing 92 inches of fabric on the floor was awesome! How embarrassing, I really need an ironing board!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuAQsPAs532E93C5An0ojR_6eIhIArnmLHQQmS4JEkHhQYe1Af0MVrsGr7p5Fmozf4MgEtA6S7St1J91H-LQGRFUJd37APJLtDu8C4nzCwN8SBuQMLPdRTjX2SJPFHG1hYmHum/s1600/P1010507.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuAQsPAs532E93C5An0ojR_6eIhIArnmLHQQmS4JEkHhQYe1Af0MVrsGr7p5Fmozf4MgEtA6S7St1J91H-LQGRFUJd37APJLtDu8C4nzCwN8SBuQMLPdRTjX2SJPFHG1hYmHum/s400/P1010507.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I didn't even take the time to pin anything, I just folded the fabric over and ironed at the same time, making a 1/2" inseam all the way around. With a 1 and 3 year old, I have to be quick about everything.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi793IobsFA7LJszl8gZ1BSKf2LoF4XwToNm02ustCob5TnitWEeCVRL5lo3VPUmx7mfVq7fHmEfISyBrXzR_14gq6E0m8FLHVv3umtIIzCe3adBuw4VAopm0nTcmIRwI3yM8J4/s1600/P1010509.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi793IobsFA7LJszl8gZ1BSKf2LoF4XwToNm02ustCob5TnitWEeCVRL5lo3VPUmx7mfVq7fHmEfISyBrXzR_14gq6E0m8FLHVv3umtIIzCe3adBuw4VAopm0nTcmIRwI3yM8J4/s400/P1010509.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Once all four sides were ironed, I sewed around the whole thing. For the top I choose a jute ribbon I found at JoAnn's. The cool thing about these curtains is you can use anything for your loops! Use a contrasting color like I did or white to keep it clean or any fabric to tie in other colors from your room - so simple! I played around a little bit, trying to figure out what I was doing, what was going to look good, length, spacing, etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRvc8MHDiJmjDRCHvt6v7VJCH5L3aV_ny6V2CYHAHVfS0pZHTEwL-E-L8rWTjpUzVxYmKJ4LJBTxDzlDhgGhmMSfKyPO2o0uAFVdtPMnXEBQLlwYM2CjeXH0rUZzyd_6zc-DhB/s1600/P1010510.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRvc8MHDiJmjDRCHvt6v7VJCH5L3aV_ny6V2CYHAHVfS0pZHTEwL-E-L8rWTjpUzVxYmKJ4LJBTxDzlDhgGhmMSfKyPO2o0uAFVdtPMnXEBQLlwYM2CjeXH0rUZzyd_6zc-DhB/s400/P1010510.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

</div> Or a bow? The bow is adorable so I chose that. First thing I did was sew on the loop that would hang the curtain.<br />
<br />

</div> Ignore my chippy nail polish. Just a simple stitch is all it takes, not even straight but it works. Then I tied my little bows and shoved them under my needle, which by the way, surprisingly did not break.<br />

Very simple, took less than 2 hours and looks really sweet. Now hopefully I will be inspired to finish the rest of the room.<br />

Take the hooks off and slap them on some old rustic wood of course!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0Apz87A5woeZooj5cNHAh5wyp24qxC64jE7tesvAqc-sHrgBD5MajNnbpb6sDZgzRV6BOXBmOFXS_kHS9_lhwTnHLYIzptB6xrE4_Rc_Hg2Z6l9IOo5m7-7xWDUvSonkJoJd9/s1600/P1010221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0Apz87A5woeZooj5cNHAh5wyp24qxC64jE7tesvAqc-sHrgBD5MajNnbpb6sDZgzRV6BOXBmOFXS_kHS9_lhwTnHLYIzptB6xrE4_Rc_Hg2Z6l9IOo5m7-7xWDUvSonkJoJd9/s320/P1010221.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Here's my not so good before picture but just imagine 4 hooks on there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghecq6HYFwFHQ0qDHVwD0omTa5xkzl79-MhoT5_ZgCrabboopeY4mgnLX4fn4jfILd62ktklxZVQZk0wNqmmMqX34w-EnocLA-dutHufU349F4-xe0bqCXbFb2GLgjD2oxulZl/s1600/P1010209.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghecq6HYFwFHQ0qDHVwD0omTa5xkzl79-MhoT5_ZgCrabboopeY4mgnLX4fn4jfILd62ktklxZVQZk0wNqmmMqX34w-EnocLA-dutHufU349F4-xe0bqCXbFb2GLgjD2oxulZl/s320/P1010209.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

Way to plain for me. Sorry all you clean loving purists :) After I took the hooks off, I went through my scrap pile of pallet boards and cut them all the same length with my chop caw.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT7wcRVbuJRn8gtnx8Mxn5DTEsHOONDg5oMVZdmFVnZibjDIQdYP_33lEGJzsw2YoTMru1OCUqOxKRV07EgdPlG0IjIOJ_Mvzo-UuKUpncdAkHmu1zRixliNUFHzerHNCWq8mb/s1600/P1010217.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT7wcRVbuJRn8gtnx8Mxn5DTEsHOONDg5oMVZdmFVnZibjDIQdYP_33lEGJzsw2YoTMru1OCUqOxKRV07EgdPlG0IjIOJ_Mvzo-UuKUpncdAkHmu1zRixliNUFHzerHNCWq8mb/s320/P1010217.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I tried to use my <a href="http://www.kregtool.com/">Kreg Jig</a> to attach the boards together, but they were all different widths and the screws were just popping through the front of the boards. So I just grabbed some scrap pieces of 1/4" plywood left over from our <a href="http://purdy-family.blogspot.com/2011/07/making-house-home-window-and-door.html">window trimming project</a> and nailed them with 5/8" brad nails...easy.<br />
<br />
I didn't want to wait for my husband to use his superhero measuring skills so I just eye balled it. I grabbed a blue marker that was on the work bench and colored the little knobs on the back of each hook so I could see where I needed to drill the holes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDxSEdpvuVe3sONuTLH-HuglpaPiGPKT5yq_vvCjOxOmuNEz25oK3GZ8n6le3GHnyMU1Hr_mKd16wllrcB4DOUWp92xXMSkEbJVYGWbaQckbQY_zzj5DbtUE7YI9SYxHul6jHL/s1600/P1010214.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDxSEdpvuVe3sONuTLH-HuglpaPiGPKT5yq_vvCjOxOmuNEz25oK3GZ8n6le3GHnyMU1Hr_mKd16wllrcB4DOUWp92xXMSkEbJVYGWbaQckbQY_zzj5DbtUE7YI9SYxHul6jHL/s320/P1010214.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Notice one is just a nub and the other is the actual hole for the screw to go through. That was easy enough, I just had to move my bit around to make the holes a bit larger to fit properly. Here's where a countersink bit would have been nice.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyub5t5hGM9pl2PTg8qBswjG6k7Z2VIdCxMFSo4DgyollMp9PQJdHLP26_xr8whmMd66Xg74ZlB2GE5ZzK7iSGKZ2TtLUynQ7f_Do-3YioMG85IHjjzu4ERGM1pj48eGuHzFrc/s1600/P1010212.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyub5t5hGM9pl2PTg8qBswjG6k7Z2VIdCxMFSo4DgyollMp9PQJdHLP26_xr8whmMd66Xg74ZlB2GE5ZzK7iSGKZ2TtLUynQ7f_Do-3YioMG85IHjjzu4ERGM1pj48eGuHzFrc/s320/P1010212.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE8YHDrvQXcBDiCdu_mSGonWYV7LQ3a6e4ZANxY0x3afBXwOwv-_Ft4Qx4LcN9rc-lY91trWfwIW-bPZaWTk9c0Nf6LeMPyx4S-fDYJlWUF3L1IXTGnM40UdEGwcPQfQs-v0-D/s1600/P1010211.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE8YHDrvQXcBDiCdu_mSGonWYV7LQ3a6e4ZANxY0x3afBXwOwv-_Ft4Qx4LcN9rc-lY91trWfwIW-bPZaWTk9c0Nf6LeMPyx4S-fDYJlWUF3L1IXTGnM40UdEGwcPQfQs-v0-D/s320/P1010211.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>All layed out and almost done! I love how it looks and it's so much more unique and really makes me wonder what else I can re-purpose. I love wood but the one thing I absolutely hate is this...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg18v-4cFlEgYooOhGeRCDuK3I6RUR9_aTD9By8rL0e-b_bMTaNgsqn6GABt9GbiVh-O1O8RJeKjIqJ0aURpSxNn5ZqEDDBo7c65KhUjgLWceBSSu_xgvDrwr1-9tYmQAKzNaJr/s1600/P1010216.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg18v-4cFlEgYooOhGeRCDuK3I6RUR9_aTD9By8rL0e-b_bMTaNgsqn6GABt9GbiVh-O1O8RJeKjIqJ0aURpSxNn5ZqEDDBo7c65KhUjgLWceBSSu_xgvDrwr1-9tYmQAKzNaJr/s320/P1010216.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I hate splinters!!! And you know what it doesn't matter how many splinters I get, I continue to skip wearing gloves. This was a big splinter...ouch. I took one for the team.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7ejn-OyXXokcncMnTouEFM4HGiNTNo3PGsRUHKbGaDLM5NpBEO7DSFrPrV3EKTOhjqX53vp_Y2VLgkCjsmRQ3npIf3uatAkd04SA1pbMWih0tz9wH9VlKOX2QZLMkhYQwGwTA/s1600/P1010218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7ejn-OyXXokcncMnTouEFM4HGiNTNo3PGsRUHKbGaDLM5NpBEO7DSFrPrV3EKTOhjqX53vp_Y2VLgkCjsmRQ3npIf3uatAkd04SA1pbMWih0tz9wH9VlKOX2QZLMkhYQwGwTA/s320/P1010218.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Once I pulled that massive <strike>log</strike> splinter out, my hooks were ready to hang. I did <strong><em><u>not</u></em></strong> want to have to put any obvious holes through the front to hang it. I thought about drilling the little nub hole all the way through and using that hole for my screws but, oh yeah, how will I get the hook back on. I'm so blonde sometimes. So I just nailed a piece of board to the wall, on the stud, using 2" nails. Using the nails will make it more difficult to remove I think, but nail holes are way smaller than screw holes so nails it is.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWiRT4naI7iDEsua7SUA0BMU7qWKVP1-JH43HqbMPhOGBvPahlQ8t19kCYjc8NqeKVxKdFajtyGhXjl-kImEixDn_VcPfo7ug51bjM57pU7RYxpOrzj9BJERxsYfvhvP8D0HtL/s1600/P1010219.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWiRT4naI7iDEsua7SUA0BMU7qWKVP1-JH43HqbMPhOGBvPahlQ8t19kCYjc8NqeKVxKdFajtyGhXjl-kImEixDn_VcPfo7ug51bjM57pU7RYxpOrzj9BJERxsYfvhvP8D0HtL/s320/P1010219.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Then I just nailed my hooks to the smaller board. I wasn't able to use 2 studs so I hope that the 4 or so nails I put in are going to hold up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhO1rdqFDCJlt1i20oPsKtcgqynG1ivjXRRuqxFcdVwhFDkxuRi0Cds38kfS1uJHHJXIXjbIx65W-2lM4LoQWtz_c2U_FAqtsfYflnoRdhSrTKP5x8EII41VTV1Mn5biKFkU05/s1600/P1010221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhO1rdqFDCJlt1i20oPsKtcgqynG1ivjXRRuqxFcdVwhFDkxuRi0Cds38kfS1uJHHJXIXjbIx65W-2lM4LoQWtz_c2U_FAqtsfYflnoRdhSrTKP5x8EII41VTV1Mn5biKFkU05/s320/P1010221.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I love it! Now the girls have somewhere to hang their towels instead of the floor.<br />

Speaking of Donna, I'm linking up to Her Saturday Nite Special this week... just in case anyone else has some hooks laying around.<br />

Maybe the under garments? Whatever it is, they just don't look complete without it. Not that people should be seeing your panties or bra. My husband probably thinks I'm crazy when I come up with yet another project but I can't help it! There's always so much to do and to learn...and improve upon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This walk through from the kitchen to the living room desperately needed some attention. With Paul's awesome measuring skills, it was pretty easy. We picked up some 1x6 pine boards for the inside and 1x4 boards for the outside frame at Home Depot for pretty cheap. </div><br />

They find amazing stuff! Because I don't have the means to travel the US picking for stuff, I get to stalk my neighborhood and Craig's List. In fact, a few blocks away, there is a section of old fencing laying in someone's yard and I want it! It would be a perfect headboard. Do I dare just go knock on their door? You bet, I just have to get enough nerve first...<br />
<br />
The coolest "pick" I ever went on was in response to an ad posted on Craig's List for "Barn Wood." Paul and I got a baby sitter and drove about 45 minutes to a small town in Nyssa, Oregon. We drove 'Ol Yeller so we can load up our treasures. <br />
<br />
My heart skipped a beat when we pulled in to this old house. There was not one, but two old barns that we could get wood from. Turns out these people sold their property and the new owner was just going to demo everything! If I had my choice, I would have stayed for hours prying pieces of wood off that old barn. We didn't have a lot of time but we did come back with a truck load of stuff...<br />
<br />

What a rush...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I searched the Internet for pictures of all the different types of wainscoting, learned about the history and went with my gut on what I like and what took my breath away. I know I'm a little cottage with a whole lot of farmhouse so I definitely didn't want anything too formal. Here are a few AMAZING inspiration pictures I was able to drool over along the way. <br />
<br />
Love this idea for the bedroom...<br />

Miss Mustard Seed's <a href="http://missmustardseed.blogspot.com/2010/04/sytycd-week-7-home-improvement-store.html">Guest Room</a> looks so inviting and comfortable! I fell in love with the wide plank look.<br />

She's even got it on the ceiling which I would love to do in our living room and master bedroom! How cute are those red cabinets by the way?!<br />

We looked at Home Depot for our wainscoting and picked up some 4'x8' sheet <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/Lumber-Composites-Paneling/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbqp3/R-202090200/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053">mdf panels.</a> We could have splurged on pine tongue and groove boards, but for the price and because its not really our house we went with the cheaper and easier option...which hopefully will look just as good. Sorry Molly.<br />
<br />
The first thing we did was have Home Depot cut the panels in half for us. For one thing, they will fit in our Jeep better. Secondly, it's totally free and less work for us because we would have to walk each panel across the street to use Chris's table saw. (Santa please bring me a table saw for Christmas!) We started on the long wall first to avoid making cuts and getting around the outlets. That didn't last long. We have exactly 8 outlets in the front room and hallway. They only put <strong>2</strong> in our living room. Too bad we're not installing them in there. Is it ok to do the entire house by the way?<br />
<br />
First thing we do to make our outlet holes is to get the measurements and transfer them to the panel. Down and across...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUJ6KMXPvVN8nvzx13fYxfQzYe9vnmT8R_W_ec_J_xdywFXnYYuZb5lxGuuuioolUX-w90PcMXL2eVly0DUxsPfD1nDW4DOiYn7Y7Lf9rSzzU_11yFPGT4j6174MPnITs0FZjf/s1600/P1000595.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUJ6KMXPvVN8nvzx13fYxfQzYe9vnmT8R_W_ec_J_xdywFXnYYuZb5lxGuuuioolUX-w90PcMXL2eVly0DUxsPfD1nDW4DOiYn7Y7Lf9rSzzU_11yFPGT4j6174MPnITs0FZjf/s320/P1000595.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGwU5D8ONiiD_Lbfi4ebs92QDbksR8BDnwXBoHWZsLc5Kr9MrqVY-8M1rQM7z-14OeWRYP3ZtcK77Q5Gx8bhurHDlKgwPR5A-h76mN3bIOubN4AS4du-Pv1gPYbNJymi550XEd/s1600/P1000598.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGwU5D8ONiiD_Lbfi4ebs92QDbksR8BDnwXBoHWZsLc5Kr9MrqVY-8M1rQM7z-14OeWRYP3ZtcK77Q5Gx8bhurHDlKgwPR5A-h76mN3bIOubN4AS4du-Pv1gPYbNJymi550XEd/s320/P1000598.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I've seen some people mark the outlets with lipstick and press the panel against it to mark it. Brilliant! If my super skilled husband wasn't there to help me get the dimensions I would have totally done that. If the fractions aren't on the tape measure, I'm counting lines. Two lines past a half....<br />
<br />
Once we had our marks down we layed the outlet cover down and traced around it to get the exact size we needed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5hcHDhQQzFr2yNRAq8H8sNE5Oa74mVDkZC3mhXqYqqwFgJVPQTx9J-_gPti8uKOTif-6R6XPIkpnzF3SoFuUYahWc1An8Tpdas_zKuu6J-cnSou_0zqffqTsBmY5q1g4kWe9T/s1600/P1000603.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5hcHDhQQzFr2yNRAq8H8sNE5Oa74mVDkZC3mhXqYqqwFgJVPQTx9J-_gPti8uKOTif-6R6XPIkpnzF3SoFuUYahWc1An8Tpdas_zKuu6J-cnSou_0zqffqTsBmY5q1g4kWe9T/s320/P1000603.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

The thing about mdf paneling is it marks so easily! Don't worry though, it will all go away once you paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCjirsI3dJPAyBaf22MktPjBTVvQgMGKVnwpx2TxXwVKHLajt_lJHQrBaHJC5lJCOzuXO3_DYnIRWQNdI3Xm_c1xpj24MR4qCryz8fNVh4wp3ydAhWYwGzrZweAnOaPIaUyR9K/s1600/P1000609.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCjirsI3dJPAyBaf22MktPjBTVvQgMGKVnwpx2TxXwVKHLajt_lJHQrBaHJC5lJCOzuXO3_DYnIRWQNdI3Xm_c1xpj24MR4qCryz8fNVh4wp3ydAhWYwGzrZweAnOaPIaUyR9K/s320/P1000609.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next step, apply some construction adhesive and stick it up on the wall and get your nailer out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvV3-9yvsnYYk1KJCiBE8cnucGHdu6UL2gPc66lXmUHMRlw6t6Fpd3FbWnWmcKDRWsNGHWBz9HazRGPSrrnNWsGP4UdldO5NW1JE6Vtx-Bu4eQekSmFbuCjjkSzFdnKB60w7Ha/s1600/P1000610.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvV3-9yvsnYYk1KJCiBE8cnucGHdu6UL2gPc66lXmUHMRlw6t6Fpd3FbWnWmcKDRWsNGHWBz9HazRGPSrrnNWsGP4UdldO5NW1JE6Vtx-Bu4eQekSmFbuCjjkSzFdnKB60w7Ha/s320/P1000610.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Goodbye blue paint. We used a 16 gauge brad nailer with 2" nails, but you could probably use a smaller gauge finish nailer. I wouldn't go too much shorter in length though because you're going to be going through at least 1/4" panel plus the drywall which is typically 3/4". All the holes will be filled so I didn't worry too much. Make sure you try to mark and hit as many studs as possible. The invention of the stud finder was genius...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho93_9K6mIsNt2KBj4NlnnGAKfmOUKiohq2Wz0YSOp4p9hi_PxJwxfurb25cQBp0Gme5ZJQTM5xRA_hpQkQ3TMqNMKT2zm7AKizsmREH0WWRSolKOgr-Jz6i3hc4v6ytTnuwj8/s1600/P1000613.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho93_9K6mIsNt2KBj4NlnnGAKfmOUKiohq2Wz0YSOp4p9hi_PxJwxfurb25cQBp0Gme5ZJQTM5xRA_hpQkQ3TMqNMKT2zm7AKizsmREH0WWRSolKOgr-Jz6i3hc4v6ytTnuwj8/s320/P1000613.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The level is another awesome tool. Once we glued the panel up, we put our level on top to make sure it was straight before we nailed. Another cool thing about wainscoting is not having to paint all the way down the wall! Just cover it up! Not that we were lazy or anything...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJOLgYdWvJmCP1wx202m_fT8BeyHgexn3vHO975tCsXfj7Dk2UqYHMh-RBCByWd9zC2D-SEPCoLuCLUbQ0feTn3SSkwB0LrRcxrIm5cjE-SFNZsovqX_TS4mMQnzuT4rnAc6g_/s1600/P1000615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJOLgYdWvJmCP1wx202m_fT8BeyHgexn3vHO975tCsXfj7Dk2UqYHMh-RBCByWd9zC2D-SEPCoLuCLUbQ0feTn3SSkwB0LrRcxrIm5cjE-SFNZsovqX_TS4mMQnzuT4rnAc6g_/s320/P1000615.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Picking the trim was another problem for me. Decisions decisions... We ended up buying a <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202075057/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053">package deal</a> that came with the base molding and the chair rail. It was nice because it already had a groove cut out, so it was specifically made for paneling plus it was primed and ready to go. Score. But once it was up on the walls, I wasn't loving it. Maybe it was because the awesome groove on the baseboard created a huge gap and I wasn't sure caulking would cover it up. The style just wasn't matching to me...it almost looked too formal for the paneling and I am definitely not formal so that's just not going to work. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So the paneling just sat. For almost eight months it sat on our walls with no molding. Then I had an idea. Well actually Chris gave me an idea. He tackled his own crown molding and just used regular boards and types of molding to create what he wanted. I held up some 1x3 and 1x4 pine boards and it looked awesome!!!! Simple and country, it sorta took my breath away. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div>Off to Home Depot we go, return all the other molding and get some pine boards for less than $2 a board. Sweet! Nope, not that easy. Have you ever tried to pick a good board from the lovely pile of boards at Home Depot or Lowe's? Not an easy task, in fact, my Hero, Ana White has some great tips <a href="http://ana-white.com/2011/03/how-choose-good-board">right here</a> about the picking process. So after <strike>arguing</strike> carefully discussing with my husband about what to do, we decided to grab some mdf boards that are already straight, primed and don't require any sanding, and we don't have to spend forever looking for boards that aren't warped and don't have huge gouges and knots in them. Score.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Seriously, Paul and I argue the ENTIRE time we do any project. So that video is just a little glimpse into what our DIY adventures are like. Xanax anyone?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
The base molding was trickier for us because we put the paneling up first so we were overlapping just a bit with the top of the molding. Because we overlapped, the bottom half pushed in and even if we nailed the top portion, it would take one <strike>kick</strike> <strike>happy child</strike> accident to push it in and the nails would just come away from the wall. Ew.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
So back and forth we went to borrow the table saw from Chris AGAIN. Good thing he's family and he like us ;) We cut small 2" strips of 1/4" plywood to lay beneath the molding to hold it flat. It works so don't laugh.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
It's looking awesome and we're finding out how crooked all the walls are. Ew. Now we just have to fill all the holes, gaps and paint. I hate painting. Yippee....</div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>oSoPurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10802339585192575168noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33176422.post-13789356912321734462011-07-20T21:43:00.001-06:002011-08-16T08:35:08.358-06:00Making a House a Home - Painting<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>This October will be exactly two years since we moved to Idaho. Two years to learn how to decorate, paint, knock down walls and make small renovations and attempt yard work and actually have a lawn to mow and TONS of weeds to pull. We have been really blessed to be able to stay in my Mother in laws home for a few years before she moves up here. Because we're not "regular" renters, we got the green light to do anything we wanted...<br />
<br />
First thing we did was paint. No offense to the previous renter but the colors in the entire front living areas were CAAARRAAAZZZYY. I know everyone has their own taste and I know she loved them but I couldn't hang. Here are some before pictures. They are not the best quality but you get the idea. Ignore the dirty house. They were plain white walls with a painted brown chair rail and a blue on the bottom. <br />
<br />

<br />
I spent a long time thinking about colors and bringing home swatches and every time I went to Home Depot or Lowes, I always stopped in the paint section. I knew I wanted either yellow, beige...maybe green. Oh but I like grey too. I had tons of swatches lying around and even bought some sample pots to paint on the walls. Even though we were given free reign, I still worried what my Mother in law would think and constantly changed my mind. Besides my Mother in law (Molly), I also have a Brother in Law and his wife (Chris & Clara) living right across the street. I worry waaaaaayyy to much what people think so it took me forever. Finally, after three or more swatches were up on the walls I gave up and decided not to think of what Molly would want and went with what I have always wanted...beige for the front room. Here are the only pictures I took, It's hard to remember to take photos along the way! As you can see, we have vaulted ceilings so the ladder was used a lot. Pain! Looking so much better though and the nice thing about wanting wainscoting is not having to go all the way down the walls. ;)<br />

<br />
The color I chose was Water Chestnut by <a href="http://glidden.com/index.do">Glidden</a>. I love it! It's a light sandy color and looks awesome! I really like Glidden paint, the only thing I would do differently is get the paint+primer in one which I heard Wal-Mart now carries. I was able to get away with one coat of primer and 2 coats of paint but if you could skip a step, all the better.<br />
<br />
The living room and kitchen were almost as fun. I used Behr paint, Provence Cream...so pretty. I was so worried about getting something too bright but this turned out so good. It's amazing how many different shades of each color are out there. No wonder it took me so long to pick. Again, I didn't get any good before pictures so here's the best look of what it looked like before.<br />
<br />
The living room, gotta love the sponge effect. It was like a putty color. So weird...next era please.<br />
<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The kitchen was a little darker but still had the same sponged technique.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifiM4tyZD59MevO3rR4HGm_qkIB2NMTX3fNIRryR3_0hHNws-eDsW6GwGo9V7YlHrnAVUM28qLVdAecVI_YVz_nGsZASB46eXMV6JhQVnXqU-TNK8Za2gIOLrWAC119tNMcDFE/s1600/P1010198.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifiM4tyZD59MevO3rR4HGm_qkIB2NMTX3fNIRryR3_0hHNws-eDsW6GwGo9V7YlHrnAVUM28qLVdAecVI_YVz_nGsZASB46eXMV6JhQVnXqU-TNK8Za2gIOLrWAC119tNMcDFE/s320/P1010198.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This lovely sponged color was on one entire wall and the rest was the darkest color you see in there. Ew. And not the best choice for the back of the house where there isn't a lot of natural light. Okay so back to the living room where I first started. This room was a nightmare! I've never really painted before so I had no ideas what I was doing and HGTV makes it look so easy. They just roll it on right? Wrong. Here's what happened first. We have a couple of missionaries that wanted to do some service work and they volunteered to help out. Despite my initial control freak thoughts, I told them yes. Besides Paul sleeps most of the day and with these guys helping out, it'll get it done in no time right? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Well...these guys are like 19 and 20 and have NO experience whatsoever in DIY as I came to find out. First thing we did was paint the ceiling because everything I read about painting said to work your way down. I picked up a huge bucket labeled "Ceiling Paint" at Home Depot and went to town. Now because the ceiling was already white it didn't even occur to me to put primer first. Yeah so three coats later it still looks like crap. The walls went a tad smoother cause these lovely young men were helping out but one broke the extension rod and I had to go back over everything a third time anyway because when they rinsed out their roller it was waaaayyyy to wet and basically "washed" the walls. Our neighbor girl was begging to "help" too but there was no way! This was turning out to be a nightmare. Are some things just easier to just do yourself?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0Ct-3BCvV1w/TiZZqiQ3mdI/AAAAAAAAAI8/P2KsIqjBlWU/s1600/P1000371.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0Ct-3BCvV1w/TiZZqiQ3mdI/AAAAAAAAAI8/P2KsIqjBlWU/s320/P1000371.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iaKTP6IvdOI/TiZbZRc8UiI/AAAAAAAAAJk/Irr818yy8Mg/s1600/P1000381.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iaKTP6IvdOI/TiZbZRc8UiI/AAAAAAAAAJk/Irr818yy8Mg/s320/P1000381.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Even Rylee got in on the action. It was definitely a learning experience!! The kitchen went smoother because I basically did it by myself over a few days time. I knew we wanted to add crown molding so it did make it a little faster not having to cut in along the ceiling. And the windows will all be framed in so I skipped those too.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I've seen these glass domes all over with cute things inside from birds and plants to books. I didn't know there was a name for them, but guess what? There is! So I googled the word "Cloche" and it found some awesome pictures and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloche">Wikipedia</a> describes it as a few things but basically it's the French word for bell and <a href="http://www.englishcreekgardens.com/Cloche1.htm">this</a> website even gives more detail with tons of eye candy to go with it. So I've decided I want one too!<br />
<br />
How about one to hold yummy desserts?<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.englishcreekgardens.com/images/cloche/8155-0.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Or one to show a simple flower arrangement?<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.englishcreekgardens.com/images/cloche/8159-0.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Any way they're arranged is adorable and did I mention I want one? So I've been looking around at the few thrift stores I visit. I did find a "cloche" at the<a href="http://www.providentliving.org/channel/0,11677,2022-1,00.html"> DI</a> the other day but it was really small and it had leaves etched into the sides and it was sort of frosted and I want to be able to see what's inside my little cloche ;) So I put it back. Skip forward a few days I <s>begged told</s> sweetly asked my hubby to stop in at a thrift store on the way home. The cool thing about this little store is that it just so happens to be next to another one! Two stores in a row!? Score for me, sorry hubby. So I ran in while he patiently (cough cough) waited in the car with the kids. First store...nothing. Well not nothing, I did find a awesome clock that reminds me of my momma so I had to get it. Second store...AMAZING! It was actually the first time I went there so I was pleasantly surprised to see rows and rows of housewares and kitchen stuff. Woo hoo! I totally scored!<br />
<br />
Not only did I find a cloche but another row over I found this little stand so I swooped that up because a cloche on a pedestal is that much better. So before you throw up a little, ignore the 70's brown stain and fabulous design on the tile and the glaring brass. Soon this little sweetie will be my very own little cloche that I can proudly display my goodies in. Best of all, both items were only $7.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmcHBtHFe-4t4hDSjYtuNt1ybMzVzk8yvxJPWefhVdKful0VIlZHaAqlze8N0JtfiZ2uYNgG3NvvFEwVV3yyWAV1Xo25zeUERNBhupbiDxRPVpc-fExlZMnXIF01rI728BMgSZ/s1600/P1000592.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmcHBtHFe-4t4hDSjYtuNt1ybMzVzk8yvxJPWefhVdKful0VIlZHaAqlze8N0JtfiZ2uYNgG3NvvFEwVV3yyWAV1Xo25zeUERNBhupbiDxRPVpc-fExlZMnXIF01rI728BMgSZ/s320/P1000592.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Once I get the wood sanded and the tile covered or replaced (it was already off) and the lovely brass painted it will be adorable. Until then here's another wonderful before picture...<br />

Inspiration from others has been the foundation for a lot that's happening in our home right now. My latest adventure in home decor has started with <a href="http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2011/02/copy-me-challenge-linkup-fji-style.html"><strong><span style="color: #660000;"><em>Donna</em></span></strong></a>. I first found Donna last year around Christmas and fell in love with not only her fabulous junky decorating but with her and her story, you can check that out<span style="color: #660000;"> </span><a href="http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2010/01/all-about-me-my-story.html"><span style="color: #660000;"><strong><em>here</em></strong></span></a>.<br />
<br />
And just because she says its okay, I'm totally becoming a copy cat!! Here's a few things I've made and put together all because Donna has inspired me to not only do what you love but to enjoy making your house a home...even if it means using rusty gears & old pallets.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PrIenLIiGms/TVX9tkc7nCI/AAAAAAAAADs/1Ywm9wT2sPY/s1600/DSCF1284.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PrIenLIiGms/TVX9tkc7nCI/AAAAAAAAADs/1Ywm9wT2sPY/s320/DSCF1284.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0zIsT4NaH9E/TVX9uVw5FjI/AAAAAAAAADw/a8FGN630rBs/s1600/DSCF1285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0zIsT4NaH9E/TVX9uVw5FjI/AAAAAAAAADw/a8FGN630rBs/s320/DSCF1285.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>I made this little table for extra storage in our kitchen. I might have to add another shelf for all my cook books but that's for another day :) The entire table and the small box on top is made from old pallet wood we ripped apart. It's a little rough around the edges and not perfect but hey, that describes me just perfectly...<br />

I love the look of the nails so I wanted to make sure the heads were still in there. And no, my hair did not catch on fire ;) And yes we often work in our pajamas...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheiRK8Sqov6Cw9nQtzNBumCrToLUq3VmXYcQZzyiY4YY2pTY1gU3LfIYRawQNG8gZw8_ZKenmFq1z4yX_8k82cWq__ZDtn4ZiTNneMtA47IOcVZtDtKuXF3ixtNWDT32n0vFHx/s1600/P1000494.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheiRK8Sqov6Cw9nQtzNBumCrToLUq3VmXYcQZzyiY4YY2pTY1gU3LfIYRawQNG8gZw8_ZKenmFq1z4yX_8k82cWq__ZDtn4ZiTNneMtA47IOcVZtDtKuXF3ixtNWDT32n0vFHx/s320/P1000494.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Once all the ends were off, I drilled my pocket holes with my favorite tool - the <a href="http://www.kregtool.com/Pocket-Hole-Jigs-Prodlist.html"><span style="color: blue;"><em><strong>Kreg Jig</strong></em></span></a>. This little tool makes assembling furniture so much easier and hides unwanted screw or nail holes. I've split so many boards on accident by being too close to the edge but with this it allows you to get right up close to the edge with no splitting! AMAZING!!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFx4ZEVwFiq35kDHKrCCVwruOPzwLb6teBPKwT24F5fWEkTtLOj54amTcKo-AFQDKog1rPaJdtsa4ujCqEjkNdrwQcvA3MGRHgHpoC2A992OcD6ONhbfrHevCSkGneePrIXKq4/s1600/P1000495.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFx4ZEVwFiq35kDHKrCCVwruOPzwLb6teBPKwT24F5fWEkTtLOj54amTcKo-AFQDKog1rPaJdtsa4ujCqEjkNdrwQcvA3MGRHgHpoC2A992OcD6ONhbfrHevCSkGneePrIXKq4/s320/P1000495.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
This little table is only the beginning for me. I've already made a "barn door" out of old pallet wood and a few more boxes that I will post later once our house is put together. Thanks <a href="http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2011/02/copy-me-challenge-linkup-fji-style.html"><span style="color: #660000;"><strong><em>Donna</em></strong></span></a> for all your inspiration!<br />

<div>Paul and I have been out in the garage sorting through boxes and trying to get more organized. The entire garage was filled with boxes from when we moved in...back in March. Yes, boxes were everywhere with one little walk way to get in the door. Well everything has been organized (somewhat) and packed away, put away, thrown away and some has even been given away. I should have taken a before picture! Once all the boxes were out of the way we wanted to make a work area for projects and stuff. We started building. First thing, saw horses. Next, workbench. With lots of room and a place to work, what's the first thing we do? Fill it back up of course!! Here's a picture of our latest project...</div><br />
<div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifvfkUjXg44AzrtfrOAZaaKdVvuqH1UIT6_wcsHTv7HTmIeEhQvZDPy9mAqXuIn9mbZKym0TSEwQKOjmVQJkLmCtnsfq_EQXf_KWFdCjcXpcuIi1fe07YcF40BuoHv4_KI-D68/s1600/DSC02458.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifvfkUjXg44AzrtfrOAZaaKdVvuqH1UIT6_wcsHTv7HTmIeEhQvZDPy9mAqXuIn9mbZKym0TSEwQKOjmVQJkLmCtnsfq_EQXf_KWFdCjcXpcuIi1fe07YcF40BuoHv4_KI-D68/s320/DSC02458.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div></div>New console table and matching side tables! As soon as I found <a href="http://ana-white.com/">Ana</a>, I have been on overload with all the amazing furniture pieces I can build myself!! I will never buy new again...<br />

<div>Sometimes, the small moments hit me and I realize "wow, this is my life." Sometimes its a crazy moment like when all my kids are crying or whining at the same time and juice is being spilt in the back seat of my car. The special ones like cleaning up vomit or being pooped on. The moments when you can only find one shoe or can't find the brush. Wondering why EVERY diaper you try leaks through? The usual moments when you can't find the keys or trying to figure out what to add to the macaroni to make it different because you've feed it to your kids 3 days in a row. Fishing things out of the toilet or explaining to your child, once again, why you don't spit at people or pick up ants and squish bugs.</div><br />
<div></div><br />
<div>Sometimes its the small moments like sitting out in the backyard with the sun shining and seeing Kassidy silently picking flowers from the grass. Listening to the birds sing in the morning or the geese fly overhead. Watching Brayden smile while he's sleeping. Rylee occasionally bending over to sneak a kiss from Kassidy. Those moments are great and I wish they can be bottled. </div><br />
<div></div><br />
<div>Lately, the best moments seem to be the time I spend in the shower, alone. Alone, with no kids, no crying, no whining, no cooking or cleaning, changing diapers. Sometimes I feel like a milking cow. I guess that's why I take such long showers! The other day, I was able to sneak out of the house with no kids in tow. I was tempted to keep driving but I knew Paul would be calling sooner or later freaking out because he can't get the baby to stop crying. So, here I was driving down the street. I rolled my windows down, turned the radio up and danced like no one was watching. I laughed at myself because 10 years ago I was always doing this but now, I guess you just forget how things used to be when life was so carefree. I loved it and I'll make a habit of sneaking out more often. Because dancing with your kids and dancing alone is totally different.</div><br />
<div></div><br />
<div>Am I the only one who has more moments of chaos than moments of bliss? I think not, but then again, I have friends that seem to have the perfect life, the perfect patience and the perfect undivided attention to her family. I know she has her moments too, some just as bad as mine. I love all my moments...</div>oSoPurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10802339585192575168noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33176422.post-1156275032189637602006-08-22T13:24:00.000-06:002006-08-22T13:30:32.200-06:00Starting Up...Ok, here we are. I decided to start a blog to keep my far away friends and family up-to-date with our family. Rachel, you are wonderful....thanks for the push. I just hope we have as many awesome activities and pictures to post as you guys do! Maybe we're just not that interesting or maybe we stay home way too much. Whatever the case, I promise to make more of an effort to get out and about so you can at least be interested when you visit us here...oSoPurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10802339585192575168noreply@blogger.com0
